The National Eisteddfod of Wales - Blaenau Gwent and the Heads of the Valleys 2010

BBC Cymru Wales' Eisteddfod TeamAll eyes are on Ebbw Vale this week, as the much anticipated National Eisteddfod kicks off in the valleys. And BBC Cymru Wales is right at the heart of this dynamic festival – on television, radio and online.

BBC Cymru Wales' coverage includes all the main Eisteddfod programmes on S4C and S4C2, extensive Radio Cymru and Radio Wales programming and dedicated online coverage.

On BBC Cymru Wales on S4C, the daytime team includes Huw Llywelyn Davies and Sara Gibson from a purpose-built studio and roving Maes presenters Mari Lovgreen and Morgan Jones. The evening highlights programmes are presented by Rhun ap Iorwerth, who's joined by a new Eisteddfod team member, Jason Mohammad.

"Our programmes will celebrate the Welshness of the area of this year's Eisteddfod, Blaenau Gwent and the Heads of the Valleys," says BBC Wales Senior Producer Ynyr Williams. "It's an area which has contributed so much to our culture, from old folk songs such as Ar Ben Waun Tredegar to the first Welsh learner to win the Chair at the National Eisteddfod, Robat Powel."

Presenter Sara Gibson, returning to work after her second maternity break, is looking forward to it. "It's been an enjoyable time, being home in Cardiff with my two daughters, Mari (two and a quarter years old) and Gwen (eight months). But I'm looking forward to broadcasting from Ebbw Vale, there's so much enthusiasm in the area.

"I was filming there the other day, and it was really great to see flags flying everywhere. There's a clock tower in the centre of Tredegar, and there were flags there extending out from the tower onto the adjoining buildings. It's created what feels like a carnival atmosphere – the local organisers have ensured that the people of the area know about the Eisteddfod. There's great excitement in the area."

BBC Radio Cymru will of course be brimming with Eisteddfod action, with Hywel Gwynfryn and Rhiannon Lewis bringing the stage competitions live from 11am every day, with competition coverage late into the night on Wednesday and Friday. Nia Lloyd Jones will be in the nerve-filled backstage area of the Pavillion, Geraint Lloyd is out and about on the Maes and Daf and Caryl will join the happy campers in the caravan sites every morning.

On Sunday, Oedfa'r Eisteddfod and Gymanfa Ganu are broadcast live. Saturday brings a long-awaited highlight for many, the final of Radio Cymru's Y Talwrn, held in the Pabell Lên (literary pavilion). On the Monday, Wednesday and Friday, Radio Cymru's Tocyn Wythnos, with Beti George, is broadcast for the first time ever on three platforms – radio, television and online. On the other nights, the programme will also go out live on the web as well as radio.

Dylan Jones will track down the stories of the day in Taro'r Post from the Maes, followed by Ffion Dafis with the best from the Babell Lên. The C2 crew is in full force, bringing the best beats from Maes B, with Huw Stephens, Magi Dodd, Glyn Wise and Jeni Lyn.

Online, bbc.co.uk/c2 will stream some of the new musical talent during the week.

Roy Noble will join the Eisteddfod team for Radio Wales, broadcasting live on Monday and Friday. Radio Wales will also broadcast the opening concert Only Men Aloud Homecoming, on Sunday 1 August, at 8pm.

Wales Today will also cover all the news from the Eisteddfod every day with Sian Lloyd and Tomos Dafydd, while Derek Brockway will be on the Maes with Eisteddfod weather updates, along with the rest of the Welsh weather.

BBC Wales Online News will have all the latest stories from the festival and the dedicated bbc.co.uk/eisteddfod site will be uploaded with a Twitter feed, blogs and all the day's results. The comprehensive site will also include results and clips from the day's performances.

Jason Mohammad and Rhun ap Iorwerth – a new presenting team

With his enthusiasm for the language, Welsh learner Jason Mohammad is the perfect choice to join Rhun ap Iorwerth for Mwy o'r Maes, the main evening highlights programme.

Jason, a popular face and voice on BBC Wales television and Radio Wales, will introduce items recorded on the festival Maes during the day. He's excited about the busy week ahead.

He says: "I've visited the Eisteddfod numerous times, of course, and have presented from the Eisteddfod Maes for Wales Today, and also for Radio Wales, but this will be the first time for me to present from the festival in Welsh.

"I wasn't brought up speaking Welsh at home and in fact only started going to the Eisteddfod when at University. I studied the language with Politics at Swansea between 1992 and 1996, so to be part of the team providing Welsh language coverage is very exciting.

"I'm looking forward to the whole experience, meeting people, and the atmosphere. I know that I'm going to be busy, but I'm sure that I'm going to have some interesting items to present."

Rhun is glad to see the Eisteddfod visiting an area such as Ebbw Vale. He says: “I think it's important that the Eisteddfod is visiting an area where the people of the area don't naturally speak the Welsh language. I know the people who live there have been working very hard in preparation for the Eisteddfod and the Eisteddfod will also be giving back to the community."

"I was born in the South Wales valleys and I'm looking forward to receiving a warm welcome from the area. I was brought up in the Glamorgan valleys, but I'm sure the Eisteddfod-goers will see for themselves how proud of their Welshness and heritage the people of the Gwent valleys are too."
