The Gateway Heads to Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan currently produces 50 million tons of oil a year andBakuis at the centre of that trade.

Gateway host Becky Anderson visits the Sangachal terminal, where oil and gas are extracted from offshore fields in the land-lockedCaspian Seaand transported abroad.

It is also the starting point of the multi-billion-dollar Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline through which almost all of Azeri oil and gas is pumped to world markets.

The Gateway looks at the revival of the Silk Road and howAzerbaijan is weaving a new route. A huge project is set to resurrect this historic transport corridor and bolster modern day trade, placingBaku at the centre, once more, of global trading highways.

The programme also visits thePort ofBaku, which has been the biggest and busiest port on theCaspian Sea since it was established in 1902. Goods come in and out, traversing the ancient annals of theSilk Road.
