CNN's move to calve an hour off Wolf Blitzer's The Situation Room, and award Rick Sanchez an extra hour with his own branded show, was met with cynisism by some media commentators, and by anger up at CNN's Washington Bureau. As with everything in television, the proof is always in the pudding, or ratings in reality. Politico's Michael Calderone takes a look at the numbers which are in for Sanchez, and whether the move by CNN is paying off. He wrote;
So how's Sanchez been doing with the extra hour? It's only been a couple weeks, but so far, the second hour of "Rick's List" is down 17 percent in total viewers, and 18 percent in the demo when compared with "The Situation Room."
Looking at last month's Nielsen weekday numbers for the 4pm hour, "The Situation Room" brought in 784k total viewers and 175k in the demo, through January 15 . Since Sanchez took over, the network has attracted 652k total viewers and 143k in the demo.
Sanchez already anchored the 3pm hour, and the ratings have stayed virtually the same from the first half through the second half of January.
