CNN.com Users Connect with Loved Ones, Charities In Aftermath of Haiti Earthquake

CNN.comIn the first month of 2010, CNN Digital was ranked the No. 1 current events and global news site on the web.  Tens of millions were drawn to CNN for the latest news about the Haiti earthquake and its aftermath, as well as information on how to donate to the relief effort and search for the missing.

No. 1 in Global Video Streams:  135.5 million total streams, beating No. 2 MSNBC Digital by 6 million streams.  CNN Digital saw a 35% increase in January ’10 vs. December ’09. In January, the top five most-viewed videos on CNN.com were stories about Haiti. (Source: Omniture SiteCatalyst).  In the two weeks following the earthquake, CNN Digital served 66 million total video streams, a 96% increase over the previous two weeks.
 
No. 1 in Unique Audience:  40.6 million unique users, 631,000 ahead of No. 2 Yahoo! News. January 2010 was the third highest number of unique users in CNN Digital’s history.

No. 1 in Total Usage Minutes:  980 million minutes, 44% more than MSNBC Digital’s usage.

In the two weeks following the earthquake, page views for Impact Your World content, an initiative on CNN.com that connects users who want to donate with aid organizations, increased 451% vs. the previous two weeks.
 
CNN’s iReporters also played a major role in covering the recovery and aftermath of the devastation by connecting Haiti’s missing to loved ones around the world. Almost half of January’s nearly 25,000 iReport submissions were related to Haiti (12,535).  Total submissions in January grew 77% versus the previous month.  (Source - iReport internal server log data).

CNN iReport also partnered with Google by providing the iReport searchable database for inclusion into Google’s People Finder, which integrated Haiti-related data from a variety of public and news sources to help locate the missing.
 
CNN Digital was also No. 1 in Mobile, averaging 12.3 million unique visitors per month in the global news and current events category, beating the nearest competitor, Yahoo! News by 116%.   (Source: Nielsen Mobile MediaView - Dec. 2009)  This is the 36th consecutive month that CNN Digital has topped the global news and current events category.

CNN Mobile users also showed great interest in the news surrounding Haiti. CNN Mobile had 28 million visits in the two weeks following the earthquake, which accounts for a 37% increase versus the previous two weeks.
