CNN's Coverage of the West Virginia Coal Mine Explosion

Twenty-five miners died Monday, April 5, when an explosion erupted inside an underground mine in West Virginia.  The explosion occurred around 4:30 p.m. at Massey Energy’s Performance Coal Co. mine in Whitesville, 30 miles south of Charleston.  CNN was the only cable news network to cover the breaking news extensively throughout primetime and live throughout the night with the latest developments.

CNN correspondents have contributed to the coverage, including Sanjay Gupta, John Roberts, Gary Tuchman, Brooke Baldwin, Brian Todd, Ed Lavendara and Sandra Endo.

Sen. John Rockefeller (D-WV) appeared on John King, USA, and Sen. Rockefeller told King, "I'm afraid we're in for a fairly long night and maybe more than that.  And we have to steel ourselves for that."

Larry King Live continued with live coverage at 12amET, and CNN was the only news network that continued to provide live news updates overnight.
