CNN Maintains Strong Online Performance

CNN.comIn July, CNN Digital held its No. 1 position among ALL Global News and Current Events sites in several key metrics, beating sites such as MSNBC Digital, Yahoo! News and Fox News Digital. Additionally, CNN Digital was No. 1 in video among ALL News and Information Properties and No. 1 in mobile among ALL News and Current Events.

In particular, the site’s in-depth reporting of the oil spill disaster in the Gulf contributed to CNN Digital’s overall traffic success in July. During the month, oil spill-related content on CNN.com accounted for 6.9 million video streams and 15 million page views. Additionally, the site’s users actively participated in covering the disaster through CNN iReport, the network’s user-generated news community. In July, iReporters contributed 736 submissions, and more than 55 were vetted for use on CNN. Since the oil spill began in April, CNN.com’s related coverage has generated a total of 95.8 million page views, 32 million video streams and 5,098 iReport submissions with 345 vetted for use on CNN. CNN’s Blog Network also drove significant traffic to the site in July, generating 72.7 million page views. Whether breaking news on This Just In, the latest in politics from the Political Ticker, everything entertainment on The Marquee Blog, or personal health and wellness information on The Chart, CNN.com’s users consumed a breadth and variety of content. After its first full month on CNN.com, Eatocracy rounds out the top five most-trafficked blogs. Created to feed the minds, hearts and stomachs of food fanatics across the world, the blog’s most popular posting – focused on the passionate controversy on whether to tip or not to tip for poor service – generated more than 1,500 comments in July.

Also in July, CNN approached its coverage of this year's Comic-Con, the largest comic book and popular arts convention in the Western Hemisphere, with a focus on fun and community. The network deployed a small army of iReporters at the convention to capture the story from the inside out. Overall, CNN received 383 iReports about Comic-Con, with 176 vetted for use on CNN. This represents a 572% increase in iReports received from Comic-Con last year. In addition, Comic-Con was the second most successful event-driven assignment in terms of number of submissions since iReport launched in 2006. (Source: iReport server log data July, 2010)
