Luis Carlos Vélez is an anchor and producer for CNN en Español.
He oversees the network's business unit, and presents financial news updates for various newscasts. Vélez is based at CNN's global headquarters in Atlanta.
Vélez supervises all of CNN en Español's business programming, including the network's prime-time business show of record, Economía y Finanzas, and En Efectivo, an innovative half-hour personal finance program. In addition, Vélez is a frequent on-air contributor to the network's regular key newscasts.
Before joining CNN en Español, Vélez worked as an anchor and producer for Portafolio TV and Bogotá en Punto for broadcaster CityTV in Bogotá for over three years. He also worked as an announcer and correspondent for Colombian radio station RCN and was a producer for Caracol TV in Bogotá, where he was in charge of the network's international section. Before getting into journalism, Vélez worked for Enron Corporation in Texas.
Vélez has interviewed various high-profile figures in recent years, including U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and Phil Chicola, Director of Andean Affairs for the U.S. Senate.
Born in Bogotá, Vélez earned a degree in Economics from the Universidad de los Andes. He also earned undergraduate credits at the London School of Economics and a Certificate in Administration and Management from Harvard University in Massachusetts. Vélez speaks Spanish and English.
