A ComRes survey commissioned by BBC Radio 5 Live's Victoria Derbyshire programme reveals only 13% of the English public think Fabio Capello's team can end their 44-year wait and win the World Cup in South Africa, which starts today.
The survey results, exclusively broadcast on this morning's Victoria Derbyshire programme (Friday 11 June, 10am-12pm), show a third of those questioned (31%) believe England will make it to the quarter-finals, whilst 17% think England will get to the semi-final.
However, 7% think they won't get past the first round group stage.
Women are more optimistic about the national team's chances, with 17% saying England can win the World Cup, compared to just 9% of men.
Of those who don't think England can lift the cup, Brazil are the clear favourites, with 24% of people backing them to win, whilst 14% of those questioned think European champions Spain will be successful.
In a World Cup-themed programme, Victoria Derbyshire was joined by David Pleat, former England manager Terry Venables and former England internationals Dion Dublin, Steve Hodge, Earl Barrett and Rodney Marsh to give their thoughts on the survey results and their assessment of England's chances.
The programme was live from current England captain Steven Gerard's old school, Cardinal Heenan in West Derby, Liverpool, speaking to his ex teachers, coaches and pupils.
They were joined by pupils of England star striker Wayne Rooney's old school, De La Salle Humanities College, for a special football match between the two schools at 10.30am to celebrate the start of the World Cup.
