BBC Radio 1 Announces Three Brand-new Social Action Documentaries for the Summer

BBC Radio 1Over the next few weeks, BBC Radio 1 will broadcast three new documentaries that tackle some of the big issues currently facing young people in the UK, it has been announced today.

The first two 20-minute documentaries will be broadcast within The Surgery With Aled on Sunday evenings (9-10pm) – one exploring the pitfalls of social networking, while the second takes a look at young prostitutes.

The third will be a 60-minute documentary about young troops returning to life in the UK following service in Afghanistan.

On Sunday 27 June at 9pm, The Surgery With Aled will house a short documentary called Overexposed Online. Narrated by Scott Mills, the documentary will take a look at the dark side of social networking and how much information young people are divulging about themselves online and what people can do with that information once it’s in the public domain.

The documentary will include some social networking horror stories that have cost people their jobs and, in some cases, where their actions online have caught the attention of the police.

Also in the documentary, Scott will be testing how much information he can find online about Aled.

On Sunday 4 July, at 9pm, The Surgery With Aled will feature a 20-minute documentary called Prostitute Diaries – telling the behind-the-scenes story of what life is really like for the UK's young prostitutes in the form of a 24-hour diary.

The programme will take in the major points of a working day for these women, explain the story of how these young women came to be sex workers, cover how the sex industry is changing and look at how they cope with the difficulties and dangers of selling sex.

Life In The Army will be broadcast on Monday 19 July, at 9pm, in BBC Radio 1 Stories – the station's weekly slot for documentaries.

In 2002, Radio 1 broadcast Tour Of Duty, which heard from young soldiers as they prepared to go and fight in Afghanistan. The programme was nominated for a Sony award in the News Programme of the Year category.

In this one-hour programme, Radio 1 returns to the original documentary to find out what happened to those young soldiers seven years on and what it's like to be a war veteran at the age of 25.

Joe Harland, Radio 1 executive producer, says: "Every week, our documentaries give Radio 1's young audience an insight into an intriguing musical world. These new programmes will also take the listener on a revealing journey, but to areas of extraordinary and sometimes intimidating areas of modern life that most people know little about."

Recent documentaries on Radio 1 include; The Art Of Noise, Africa Makes Some Noise, The A-Z Of Vampire Weekend, The Story Of The Naughties and The Story Of The DIY Video.
