Sky News Appoints Nick Powell as On Air Sports Editor

Nick PowellSky News has announced that Nick Powell has been appointed to the newly created role of Sports Editor as part of the channel’s changes to Sports presentation.

He joins Sky News Political Editor Adam Boulton, City Editor Mark Kleinman and Foreign Affairs Editor Tim Marshall in breaking big news stories as well as providing specialist expertise and analysis.

Nick Powell said of the appointment: “My role is to ensure that quality sports presentation and reporting are a key feature of Sky News’ output. With our colleagues in Sky Sports, we aim to provide the best action, live reporting, major interviews and in-depth analysis, first.”

The position will see Nick split his time between weekday sports bulletins, evening football match analysis and presentation of the Saturday Sport programme, as well as the day-to-day management of the Sky News sports department. Nick, whose career in broadcasting spans 28 years, will also be on hand to offer expert analysis of the biggest breaking sports news stories.

Nick will take up his new role from 23rd August, to coincide with the launch of Sky Sports News HD, and Sky Sports News will start providing the Sky News sports bulletins from their studios between 1200 and 1400 and during the evening news wheel, each weekday.

The changes are designed to deliver an even better service for Sky News viewers, who recognise Sky Sports as a leader in sports broadcasting. The integration of Sky Sports News talent, greater editorial co-operation, shared news-gathering and on-air branding will help bolster the firepower of the Sky News Sports offering and give prominence to the Sky Sports News channel’s look and feel.

Further on-air changes include Charlie Thomas and Chris Skudder becoming reporter/presenters, enabling them to expand from presentation into reporting from the field during live sporting events, as well as continuing to present from the Sky News Centre.
