The Weather Channel Mobile App Now Available for Windows Phone 7

The Weather ChannelThe Weather Channel has announced the latest addition to its increasingly popular roster of mobile weather applications with the debut of an app for Windows® Phone 7, the new mobile platform from Microsoft.

Now available as the preferred U.S. weather provider from the Windows® Phone Marketplace, The Weather Channel for Windows Phone is an ad-supported app, available at no charge for consumers.  The app offers the most reliable, accurate weather forecasts available on mobile.  Features include interactive weather maps, a panoramic view screen, metro traffic cameras, a snapshot of weather conditions for saved locations, and more.

"The Weather Channel wanted to provide Windows Phone 7 customers with the most accurate, up-to-date weather forecasts available, exactly when and where they need it while on the go," said Cameron Clayton, senior vice president of mobile, The Weather Channel. "An ad-supported model allows us to include more features users want while still remaining a free, must-have app for consumers."

The Weather Channel for Windows Phone app offers all the functionality, usability and weather data details users have come to expect from TWC on mobile.  The new app features patented TruPoint technology from TWC that provides detailed weather conditions accurate up to 2 kilometers, so weather is localized not only by city or ZIP code but also by specific addresses or places of interest.   Features include:

  • Animated, interactive maps can be customized by weather layers such as radar and clouds, temperature, wind speed and recent precipitation
  • Detailed weather data in hourly, 36-hour and 10-day forecasts, as well as current conditions including temperature, wind, humidity, UV level, dew point, visibility, sunrise and sunset
  • A panoramic view screen and background weather images, the app is visually attractive and takes advantage of Microsoft's new user interface capabilities
  • Traffic cameras for local roads and highways (for supported markets)
  • Share weather information via e-mail to keep friends updated on weather effects
  • Save favorite locations for quick access to the most relevant weather
  • Video center with local and regional forecasts featuring TWC on-camera meteorologists
  • A severe weather center with updates on tropical systems, winter weather and more

In addition, The Weather Channel for Windows Phone app will soon include a hurricane central section with tropical tracking information, integrate TWC's iWitness Weather community of users, and be internationalized in Spanish, German and French languages.

A leader in the mobile industry, The Weather Channel is now the second most popular application overall on mobile smart phones including iPhone, Android and BlackBerry devices, behind only Facebook according to Nielsen.  In addition, TWC is the most downloaded and most used weather app on all platforms.  The Weather Channel for Windows Phone application will be available from Windows® Phone Marketplace.
